[서울=뉴시스] 유세진 기자 = 러시아군은 19일 우크라이나가 드론 공격을 확대하고, 블라디미르 푸틴 대통령이 중국으로 향하는 가운데 러시아 전역에서 수천명의 병력이 참여하는 3일 간의 핵무기 훈련을 시작했다고 프랑스24가 보도했다.

우크라이나에 대한 4년이 넘는 공세 동안 러시아는 핵무기 보유를 과시하며 반복적으로 핵무기 사용을 위협해 왔다.

이번 훈련은 또한 러시아와 미국 간의 마지막 핵무기 협정이 결렬된 지 몇 달 만에 이루어졌으며, 푸틴 대통령이 러시아 핵 무력 위력을 과시하는 발언을 쏟아내는 가운데 이루어졌다.

러시아 국방부는 "2026년 5월19일부터 21일까지 러시아 연방군은 침략 위협 발생 시 핵 무기 준비 및 사용에 관한 훈련을 실시하고 있다"고 밝혔다.

지난 2월 미국과의 신전략무기감축협정(뉴 스타트 협정)이 종료되면서 세계 최대의 핵보유국인 두 나라는 공식적으로 수많은 제약에서 벗어났다.

이번 훈련에는 6만5000명 이상의 병력과 200여대의 미사일 발사대를 포함한 7800여 종의 장비 및 무기가 투입될 예정이라고 국방부는 밝혔다. 항공기, 선박, 잠수함, 핵잠수함이 모두 참가할 예정이다.

국방부는 탄도미사일과 순항미사일도 시험 발사할 것이라고 덧붙였다.

국방부는 "이번 훈련은 벨라루스 영토에 배치된 핵무기의 공동 훈련 및 사용과 관련된 문제도 다룰 것"이라고 덧붙였다.

러시아는 북대서양조약기구(나토)와 국경을 접하고 있는 동맹국 벨라루스에 핵 탑재 미사일인 오레슈니크를 배치했다.

러시아는 푸틴 대통령이 이틀 간 중국을 방문하기 몇 시간 전 훈련 시작을 발표했다.

Russia's army on Tuesday began three days of nuclear weapons drills involving thousands of troops across the country, as Kyiv escalates its drone attacks and with President Vladimir Putin headed to China.

Throughout its more than four-year offensive in Ukraine Moscow has flaunted its possession of nuclear weapons and repeatedly threatened to use them.

The drills also come months after the last nuclear arms pact between Russia and Washington broke down and amid a fresh spate of comments from Putin touting the prowess of Moscow's atomic forces.

"From May 19 to 21, 2026, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are conducting an exercise on the preparation and use of nuclear forces in the event of a threat of aggression," the defence ministry said.

The ending of the New START agreement with Washington in February formally released the world's two largest nuclear powers from a raft of restrictions.

The drills will involve more than 65,000 troops and 7,800 types of equipment and weapons, including more than 200 missile launchers, the defence ministry said. Aircraft, ships, submarines and nuclear submarines will all take part.

The ministry said it would also test-launch ballistic and cruise missiles.

"The exercise will also address issues related to the joint training and use of nuclear weapons deployed on the territory of the Republic of Belarus," the ministry added.

Russia has deployed a nuclear-capable missile, the Oreshnik, to its ally Belarus, which borders NATO.

Moscow announced the start of the drills hours before Putin was due in China for a two-day visit.
